Penicillium species are commonly found in the environment and may grow indoors when building materials remain damp. They are frequently associated with water-damaged or moisture-affected materials.
Stachybotrys is a moisture-associated mold that may develop on cellulose-containing building materials that have remained wet for an extended period. Its presence can indicate significant or prolonged moisture conditions that should be investigated and corrected.
Although Stachybotrys is commonly referred to as “black mold,” color alone cannot reliably identify a mold species. Laboratory analysis is necessary when confirmation of the mold type is required.
Alternaria is commonly found outdoors but may also be detected indoors. Indoor growth may occur on damp or water-affected materials, particularly where condensation, elevated humidity, or water intrusion is present. Moisture conditions should be evaluated when indoor growth is suspected.
Chaetomium is commonly associated with water-damaged cellulose-containing building materials. Its presence indoors may indicate a history of significant or prolonged moisture exposure, including concealed moisture within wall or ceiling cavities.
When Chaetomium is detected, the underlying moisture source and affected building materials should be evaluated to determine the appropriate next steps.
Ulocladium is commonly associated with damp or water-damaged environments and may be detected alongside other mold types. Indoor detection may indicate an ongoing or previous moisture condition that should be investigated.
Because Ulocladium can resemble other dark-colored molds, visual appearance alone should not be used for identification. Laboratory analysis can be used when confirmation is necessary.
